The Oscars and surprises

A friend just told me she’s invited to a birthday party tonight starting at 6. I was surprised to learn there are actually people on the planet who won’t be watching the Oscars. (at least not live.) I wouldn’t want to be forced to choose.  But I wasn’t invited.  So I’ll be glued to the TV…almost from the instant the first star steps on the red carpet.

I have to say though, the Oscars have lost a little something for me over the years.  (Not that my opinion matters, but here it is anyway.)

I still see the movies—at least all the ones that could possibly win.  ( I couldn’t bring myself to see 127 hours— although V saw it twice.) And on the topic of James Franco —though I really like him, and Anne Hathaway—having them host is such a ploy to pull younger viewers when everyone knows Billy Crystal should be hosting every year.

His opening guaranteed surprises—and I guess overall that’s what’s missing—–a streaker, a political rant. The last surprise I remember was Adrien Brody kissing Halle Berry. Maybe it’s because like so many other things, the Oscars seem over-produced.  (Don’t even get me started on the gift bags valued at $75,000–-see the whole  list here. Really, isn’t an Oscar nomination a gift enough?)

The surprises are most lacking in the most important part of the whole event—the clothes. Now that stylists rule the red carpet, all the stars are perfectly put together. It takes a village to get them ready and they look it. I miss the expressions of personal style and personality—

Like Demi Moore who designed her disastrous dress in the pre-historic pre-Rachel Zoe days of 1998.

Today’s occasional mistakes aren’t even gasp-worthy. Lately the fashionistas really have to scramble to make up the list of “worst dressed.”  Only Helena Bonham Carter has the guts to buck the system. She promises her outfit will probably be a “catastrophe.”

This is one of those years when even the winners won’t be big surprises. Colin Firth, Christian Bale, yadda yadda yadda.  I’m sure Natalie Portman will win for Best Actress and I thought she was fantastic in The Black Swan.   But secretly I’m pulling for Annette Bening.  It just never seems to be her year.

I think I’m starting to sound like one of those old people who complains that things were better in the old days. I actually attended the Oscars once when I first moved to LA. It was fun and glamorous, but the best part is just being able to say I went.   I’d rather watch on TV—and eat chocolate popcorn.  (which proves I really am getting old.)

And maybe the Oscars will surprise me after all.

So funny, Darryle. I dragged my husband out to the late show tonight so I could get in the last nominee before tomorrow’s show. He said, “It’s freezing, can’t we just stream something on Netflix?”, totally missing the point. Also skipped 127 hours; also want Billy Crystal every year. Start a Facebook petition page for next year!

That IS funny! And I love the idea for a Facebook page—I would start it today before the show airs—but think maybe I owe James Franco and Anne Hathaway the dignity of keeping an open mind. Though Billy’s Oscar act is hard to follow, even years later.

I loved all your observations about the Oscars. I, too, think we have to give the “young-uns” a chance tonight, and if they aren’t entertaining, start a petition for Billy Crystal to return. I haven’t missed the Oscars EVER (at least for the last 40 years or so). It is sacrosanct in my house. I fill out the ballot, I do the whole thing. I am deviating from all other voters because I have made my mark for best actress for Annette Bening. Not only is it her time, she deserves it for the multi-layers in her part. And, Darryle, you really should give in and go see 127 hours . You’ll never see a movie where one actor (or actress) is on screen the entire time, and you are just riveted. The story is a testament to the human spirit and survival. Just close your eyes for the couple of minutes when it is unbearable.

So, it’s only four hours or so until we can start watching the arrivals on the red carpet. Oh boy!

I think you’re possible even more devoted than I am—I stopped filling out the ballot a few years ago–though I still take pride in picking winners. I agree about Annette Bening—although seems lately actors only win for the “bigger” performances or for toning down their looks. I think I’ll have to take your word and see 127 hours—maybe easier to watch it on a smaller screen?
We’ll have to compare notes tomorrow and see about starting a petition for Billy Crystal. Meanwhile enjoy the show!

I too have been watching the Oscars for SO MANY years and try to at least see all of the “Best Picture” nominated movies every year. Made it this year! (well, not Toy Story 3) 127 Hours was really good, I just had to close my eyes during the “cut arm off” scene. James Franco was good but I loved The King’s Speech – saw it befoe it was even nominated. And, I agree about Natalie Portman – she’ll probably get it and really did a great job BUT please Annette Benning!

Happened to see this on a quick break from watching the red carpet; just heard one of the handicappers predict it’s not even a contest for best Actress—Natalie Portman has it sewed up. I’m such a fan I hate to root against her, but still pulling for Annette, too.
And now I really WILL see 127 hours—if you and Marla could both handle it.
    Thanks for commenting, BJ.
