What to remember, what to forget

Enough procrastination.  Monday morning is the time for starting fresh.   I’m determined to get to the gym and work out.

I rush out of the house with my arms full—balancing a cup of coffee without a lid.   Plus I’m slightly disoriented;  today I’m driving V’s car.  In my car,  no one would ever notice a coffee spill.

In the car, usually I listen to books on tape or talk on the phone.   I’m vigilant about obeying the law and I have a little portable speaker —which actually made the switch into V’s car.    I turn it on, but the power is fading.   And then I remember– I can’t charge it because I  forgot the mobile charger from my car—which I managed to lose a few weeks ago.   Which reminds me that on the same trip,  I also lost the charger to my camera battery.

There’s a definite theme here—since I also forgot today to take a CD with me from the book on tape I’m listening to.    So I’m in the car– with nothing to think about except how I keep forgetting things.

I get to the gym, open the door and reach for my purse.     It’s not there.

Et tu, purse?

My whole life is inside it.  Even my past lives are inside it.   I figure I must have set it down on the street outside the house in order to open the car door with the coffee—which by the way,  made it to the gym  unspilled—and undrunk.

There is no way I can work out without obsessing about my purse  (although almost any excuse works for me to avoid exercising).   I get back in my car and head home.  Now I’m even more annoyed  by my forgetfulness; plus  annoyed by how the day and the week are starting off.

I have a Maria Shriver moment, using the phone to call a friend who is going through some tough times— dealing with a LOT more than lost chargers and purses — and inspiring me by soldiering on with resilience, determination and spirit.

After we talk I remember that CD I forgot to bring,  from a book called The Survivor’s Club. ‘ This isn’t a book review; but the title reminds me :

Only the strong survive

Survival of the fittest

Which means that every single person on this planet carries inside us DNA from the strongest and fittest survivors—- otherwise we wouldn’t be here.

I think of my heroic friend and all the people who get up every day facing enormous challenges— how amazing is the human spirit?

And that’s how I forget the stuff I forgot, and remember what I want to remember.

P.S.  When I get home, I find my purse just where I left it inside the house.

……V bought me a new charger for the car.

…..and I feel totally different about how the day and the week started out.

But I still haven’t made it to the gym.
