opposites attract

This morning on the phone, I was talking to Alli about my friend Myra Goodman’s amazing cookbook.   When suddenly  it struck me—I’m completely clueless in the kitchen— but some of my closest friends– are the total opposite.   And then a few hours later, life provided a perfect example :

I’m in the car at 4:30.  I get a call from my friend Jane who just got back from a road trip and decided to have a last-minute Memorial Day barbecue.    V and Daniel will be out late playing golf.   As for me, I don’t want to say I have a dull social life—but I can be there in a hour.    When I show up I find out there are at least 7 other people with no social life.   Jane  invited everyone, shopped for groceries and cooked—all in the 3 hours since she got home.

To prepare the same meal for the same number of people would take me 3 days– not 3 hours.   Everything looks perfect,  tastes even better.  And we’re talking not just barbecue but a huge assortment of dishes, all homemade—topped off with  fresh baked chocolate souffle and fresh whipped cream– plus an entire extra souffle for me to take home for Daniel and V.

Not only does this prove opposites attract.  For me, this is the  meaning of  “friends with benefits.”
