And I was worried about Daniel in the lion’s den.
I can’t even fathom having my 16- year- old daughter all alone on a sailboat in rough stormy seas in the pitch black night in the middle of the Indian Ocean hundreds of miles from the nearest ship and thousands of miles from land…… Not to mention how far she is from a Starbucks.
That’s what I call a Free Range kid.
As I write this, Abby Sunderland is alive and well, located after a frantic search by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The nearest ship won’t be able to reach her for 24 hours; so far there’s no word on whether she’ll abandon ship or continue the other half of her trip.
Either way, she’s already lost out on her chance to be the youngest person to sail around the world alone.
But instead she’ll have the consolation prize of TV cameras and a book and talk shows and controversy over whether her parents should be comforted or condemned.
I hear Bravo is already planning to have her host a new reality show—Free Range Kids of Southern California.
And on top of all that, she’ll have a hell of a college essay.
God bless America.
