Book Stew

Though lately I’ve been occupied with boobs, I’m shifting over by one letter.

I missed writing about the latest books from my online book club– but don’t  miss reading them.

Room by Emma Donoghue, and The Kids are All Right–—by Diana, Liz, Amanda and Jack Welch.   One is fiction; one is true—both are about kids in challenging situations.

Room is the story of a boy who has lived all his life imprisoned in a small room with his kidnapped mother,  a fictional account reminiscent of the Jaycee Dugard abduction.

The Kids are All Right is told from the individual perspectives of the four Welch kids, who were orphaned as teenagers when their dad in a car accident and their mom died of cancer.

I know, the scenarios sound grim;  but the books aren’t.    Both are well worth reading—-with  much food for thought.

More food is in the upcoming book pick— The Earthbound Cook Cookbook by Myra Goodman. With a twist– Linsey Krolik of FromLeft to Write and Jane Maynard of This Week for Dinner cooked up a unique and wonderful idea to merge a book blog and a cook blog—two more words separated by one letter.

They also merged the virtual world with the real—by inviting Bay Area bloggers from both sites to a pot luck dinner.  Each made a recipe from the book which we all shared tonight—this is my kind of book group.

Perfectly delicious.  And perfect timing– since today the book club also starts a new feature—getting to know more about the members.  I’m first— click here to read my interview.

Darryle, I love it! Last night was the best part of From Left to Write so far. Seeing people in person, bringing together fantastic people with fantastic food, hearing about how people have been inspired by Myra’s book to start composting, use cloth napkins and cook new things for their families…how can we top this? Thanks so much for your support of From Left to Write and, Myra, it is such a pleasure cooking from The Earthbound Cook. Cheers to you both!

It was all delicious—love the idea that I could sample recipes before attempting to cook them! And especially love connecting people—this was the best!
PS NO one is a more amazing woman and wonderful friend than you.

Totally agree—couldn’t have been better. It will be hard to top this one!
I think this is such a wonderful idea from you and Jane that people all over the country will start doing the same thing. HOpe so!

Your book is so filled with useful information and ideas–in addition to the recipes–. I did discuss the cloth napkins while putting mine on my lap but didn’t hear about the composting–guess maybe I was too busy eating!

I have to confess it was gorgeous that night— I even ate outside. But maybe you could organize a similar event where you are—with a dinner like this you won’t even notice the weather! Thanks for commenting.
